There has been a surge of the signing of free trade agreements (FTA) worldwide, and yet China's participation is limited. By exploiting the variation in the content depth of FTAs across country pairs, we study how China's innovation at the prefecture-industry level is shaped by the exposure of local industries to external FTA shocks, and find a negative effect on average. Heterogeneity analysis shows that labor-intensive industries are the most negatively impacted, followed by capital intensive industries. Interestingly, we find a positive effect in technology intensive industries. Prefecture-industry level exports also declines as an important channel. Firm-level patent analysis also indicates a negative average treatment effect. Only the most productive or largest firms strive to innovate more.

近年来全球自由贸易协定（FTA）的签署增长迅速，然而中国的参与仍然有限。通过利用各国之间FTA签署条款深度的差异，我们研究了中国创新在地区产业层面上如何受到本地产业暴露于外部FTA冲击的影响，发现其平均效果为负。异质性分析显示，受负面影响最严重的是劳动密集型产业，其次是资本密集型产业。有趣的是，我们在技术密集型产业中发现了正面效果。地区产业层面的出口也作为一个重要渠道而下降。公司层面的专利分析同样表明了一个负面的平均处理效应。只有生产率高或销售额大的公司才进行更多创新。
